 Introduction

Education plays a significant role in shaping human behaviour, and our attitude towards the environment. In our ever progressing world, environmental challenges such as pollution, deforestation, global warming and general disrespect for the environment, threaten life on earth. Through education, and only through education, can individuals gain awareness and understanding of these issues, and thus learn how to safeguard the environment and our world, for future generations to come.







Importance of Environmental Education

Environmental education enables students to understand the symbiosis and interdependence between humans and nature. Right now, we are slowly depleting all the life, nutrients and resources out of nature, and one day it will die. We have to learn to live in harmony with nature. Education helps humans recognise the value of our natural resources and the need for their conservation. By learning about environmental issues, students become more sensitive towards so many problems our ‘dying’ planet is facing, and they can work toward sustainable development.

What can schools and teachers do?

Schools are ideal places to develop environmental awareness and responsibility. Teachers can encourage eco-friendly habits such as turning off the water faucet when not in use, reducing plastic use in school, planting trees and also weekly updates and small vlogs about what is going on the the world. Teachers need to practise these habits in front of students as well. Debates, projects, presentations and campaigns also help students actively participate in environmental protection. 

So in conclusion, education is the most powerful tool for creating and promoting environmental awareness. By educating students, society can create responsible citizens who will go forward and protect the environment for future generations.
